Three strategic factors to improve the country's position in the global steel value chain/ Moving towards the advanced steels production is a strategic necessity
IMIDRO’s Chairman of the executive Board of Directors explained three strategic elements for improving the country's position in the global steel value chain.
According to IMIDRO's public relations, Mohammad-Masoud Samiei Nejad at the 12th International Steel Conference (Steel Price) stated: Ensuring sustainable energy through long-term contracts, investing in exclusive power plants, and managing consumption are among the strategic factors of this path.
He continued: Technology modernization and development of advanced products by supporting the digitalization of production lines, improving quality and investing in special steels, as well as diversifying the export basket and entering markets with high added value by facilitating the export of special products along with creating incentives and targeting automotive, energy and industrial markets in the region are among the other factors.
World Facing Three Strategic Transformation
IMIDRO’s Chairman of the executive Board of Directors explained noted: the global steel industry is facing three strategic transformations: the shift to low‑carbon steel, a surge in demand for advanced steels, and digitalization and automation.
He added: The agenda for reducing carbon emissions has prompted governments and large companies to place renewable technologies and energies at the heart of their development.
Steel development is impossible without innovation
Samiei Nejad, pointing out that global trends in the steel industry indicate that the future of the steel industry is unimaginable without technological innovation and upgrading the product portfolio, declared: "In areas such as new generation vehicles, petrochemical energy industries, aerospace and military, we need high-strength steels in corrosive environments, light weighting, digitalization and automation."
New Global Uses of Steel
The Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade, referring to the types of steel consumption worldwide, stated: in the building and infrastructure sector 52 percent, equipment and machinery 15 percent, automobiles 12 percent, and steel products 10 percent of total steel consumption are allocated.
48% of steel products in the world are high-strength
Samiei Nejad stated:
The steel products used in each field have changed and are moving towards the use of special and advanced steels, adding that the reason for the global development of the special steel market is mainly the development of infrastructure projects, including the replacement of old railway lines with new lines and the implementation of smart grids around the world.
According to Samiei Nejad, innovation in manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing and the development of advanced alloy steel to produce more intricate and customized stainless steel parts with greater precision and less waste, predicting the growth in demand for stainless steel is an example of the development of special steels.
The Head of IMIDRO board noted that Iran's move towards advanced steel for employment development and the growth of this industry is a strategic necessity and continued: The future belongs to the countries that move away from commercial steel and go towards advanced steels that are high in strength, lightweight, and have high added value. He continued: Advanced steels domestically should focus on special alloy steels, specialized stainless steels, corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant steels, specifically for the automotive, energy, and defense industries.
